Kent Nagano conducts George Benjamin premiere in Hamburg (April 2019)

Kent Nagano, General Music Director of the Hamburg State Opera, will conduct the German premiere of George Benjamin’s opera Lessons in Love and Violence staged by Katie Mitchell with the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra on 7 April 2019. The work is a co-commission with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (world premiere 10 May 2018), De Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam, Opéra de Lyon, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona and the Teatro Real Madrid. Additional performance dates in Hamburg include 10, 13 and 18 April.

Lessons in Love and Violence tells a story of blood, power, dynasty, jealousy, treason and sex. All those themes, found in plays by Shakespeare and Marlowe, have been stirred by playwright Martin Crimp and composer George Benjamin into a musical frame: hot and cold, passionate and restrained.

Find here further information on the new production at the Hamburg State Opera.

The premiere will be broadcast live on NDR Kultur at 18.00 CET. Click here to listen live.

On Friday, 5 April, the Elbphilharmonie will host a public discussion with Kent Nagano and George Benjamin including live music by the composer himself and with chamber works by Mahler, Messiaen and others. Find here more information on the event.

World Premiere of David Philip Hefti’s Flute Concerto “Media nox” at the Heidelberger Frühling festival (March 2019)

On 3 April, David Philip Hefti’s Flute Concerto Media nox – Music for the third nocturnal vigil for flute and orchestra will be premiered at the Heidelberger Frühling festival by Tatjana Ruhland and the Deutschen Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken-Kaiserslautern under the baton of Jamie Philips. The concert will be recorded for radio broadcast by the German public radio station Saarländischer Rundfunk. As an ‘encore’, Jörg Tröger will talk with David Philip Hefti, Tatjana Ruhland and Dietrich Götze, who initiated and donated the commission.

David Philip Hefti about Media nox:
„The harmonies of this work are primarily quarter-tone, and explore the sounds of twilight, the night, spheres, dreams, sleeplessness and hallucinations. They create sound-surfaces alternately static, animated and iridescent that are the central idea of the work; these are then repeatedly roughened up by the rhythmic and melodic threads woven by the solo flute. This microtonal music is what I repeatedly here in the twilight state between sleep and sleeplessness.“

Here you can find a podcast (in German) of the Heidelberger Frühling featuring David Philip Hefti, who talks about composing his Flute Concerto Media nox for Tatjana Ruhlan, and here a mutual video of David Philip Hefti and Tatjana Ruhland about this project. In an interview with SWR2 Treffpunkt Klassik, Tatjana Ruhland speaks about the upcoming world premiere of this work, here you can listen to it.
