Mari Kodama’s “Kaleidoscope – Beethoven Transcriptions” (July 2020)

Mari Kodama, who has set Beehoven as a focal point in her discography, once again demonstrates her extraordinary abilities as a benchmark Beethoven interpreter with her CD Kaleidoscope – Beethoven Transcriptions. She is one of the few pianists ever to have released all 32 piano sonatas (PENTATONE, 2014) and now her recording of transcriptions for piano of Beethoven’s string quartets by Saint-Saëns, Mussorgsky and Balakirev as well as Beethoven’s Variations on the Finale of Mozart’s Clarinet Quintets has been well received.

Here are some of the voices that demonstrate this:

For streaming services ( Classical Music for Love (Apple Music), Women in Classical Music (Apple Music)), but also the BBC Record Review the CD is relevant. The BBC Music Magazine praises Mari Kodama for her “beautifully-judged pianisn”. Gramophone also describes the CD as a “fascinating recording, very beautifully recorded, with some real discoveries along the way” and concerti also praises Mari Kodama for her congenial mastery of the difficult task of adequately reproducing string movements on the piano. Pizzicato says “Mari Kodama has done an excellent job of making the different colours audible” and the Classical CD review writes: “Beautiful performances by Kodama, and the new recording captures their rich sound in excellent multi-channel audio”.
