“Great symphony with an orchestra from the so-called early music scene: It is an exciting musical adventure that the Concerto Köln tackles with the conductor Kent Nagano in the project “Wagner-Lesarten” – with the Wesendonck-Lieder and Bruckner’s 3rd Symphony.”
Listen to the concert of 16 May in the Philharmonoie Köln here on Deutschlandfunk Kultur for another 30 days.
Richard Wagner: Five songs after poems by Mathilde Wesendonck (arrangement for voice and orchestra by Felix Mottl)
Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 3 in D minor (3rd version 1889)
On 27 April Kent Nagano and the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra will open the Hamburg International Music Festival with Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony and Ligeti’s Requiem at the Elbphilharmonie. Further information can be found here.
Kent Nagano, General Music Director of the Hamburg State Opera, will conduct the German premiere of George Benjamin’s opera Lessons in Love and Violence staged by Katie Mitchell with the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra on 7 April 2019. The work is a co-commission with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (world premiere 10 May 2018), De Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam, Opéra de Lyon, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona and the Teatro Real Madrid. Additional performance dates in Hamburg include 10, 13 and 18 April.
Lessons in Love and Violence tells a story of blood, power, dynasty, jealousy, treason and sex. All those themes, found in plays by Shakespeare and Marlowe, have been stirred by playwright Martin Crimp and composer George Benjamin into a musical frame: hot and cold, passionate and restrained.

The premiere will be broadcast live on NDR Kultur at 18.00 CET. Click here to listen live.
On Friday, 5 April, the Elbphilharmonie will host a public discussion with Kent Nagano and George Benjamin including live music by the composer himself and with chamber works by Mahler, Messiaen and others. Find here more information on the event.

“Nearly twenty years after my very first collaboration with the OSM as a guest conductor, the 2019–2020 season provides the Orchestra with a new opportunity to offer themes that engage with a variety of perspectives and experiences: we hope they will be a source of wonder and vitality for our audience members while remaining at the forefront of our modern lives.”
