Jan Vogler will remain director of the Dresden Music Festival for the upcoming years: The internationally acclaimed cellist has extended his contract with the state capital of Dresden to 2026. In 2009, he assumed the role of director of the festival, founded in 1978, and has since endeavored to establish it as one of the most important and successful classical music festivals in Europe. From 2009 to 2019, the Festival’s revenue from ticket sales and funds from sponsors has increased fivefold.

On January 23, the cello concerto by Zhou Long (China), Sven Helbig (Germany) and Nico Muhly (USA), which was composed especially for Jan Vogler and premiered last year at the Dresden Music Festival 2019, is part of an event with the writer Thea Dorn and will be broadcast live on WDR 3 & WDR 5 as well as in a live stream here.

The renowned cellist Jan Vogler will perform an extraordinary repertoire at the Philharmonie in Cologne on 19 November 2019: Benjamin Britten’s Symphony for Violoncello and Orchestra with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski.

The Moritzburg Festival 2019 will take place from 4 – 18 August. It will be the 27th edition of the festival. The artistic director of the festival is the cellist Jan Vogler.
This year’s patron is the soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter.

Jan Vogler is often referred to as Dresden’s “artistic foreign minister”. As artistic director of the music festival, the cellist invites renowned artists to the Elbe and promotes the city worldwide.

On 14 June 2019 cellist Jan Vogler and guitarist Ismo Eskelinen released their new CD Songbook on Sony Classical. With pieces by de Falla, Paganini and Piazzolla, among others, the two musicians expand the repertoire of the unusual combination violoncello and guitar. The selection of pieces includes arrangements originally composed for violin and guitar, such as Cantabile by Niccolo Paganini, as well as original works such as the Sonata for guitar and cello by Radamés Gnattali and Moon River by Henri Mancini, a classic of popular music.
