Today, Chief Conductor Kent Nagano and Artistic Director Georges Delnon have announced the new concert season 2018/19 of the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg.
Kent Nagano leads five Philharmonic Concerts during the new season, in addition to the New Year’s Concert and a special concert at the International Hamburg Music Festival. These programmes include classic works by Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms. However, Hamburg’s General Music Director will also perform modern works, such as Ligeti’s Requiem and Atmosphères and Widmann’s Con brio.

On 26 February 2018 the latest piece by composer David Philip Hefti Prima nocte – Musik zur ersten Nachtwache für Kammerorchester (2017) will have its world premiere by the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, conducted by Kazuki Yamada. The orchestre commissioned the work on the occasion of its 75. Anniversary. Find more information here.
David Philip Hefti clarifies the idea behind the work:
“Prima nocte is the first of four compositions that relate to the Roman vigils. The harmony of the work circles around the themes twilight, night, sphere, dream, insomnia and hallucination. This is how – as the guiding principle of this work – static, moving and iridescent soundscapes develop, which push both the rhythm and the melody into the background. This microtonal music is something I often hear in the twilight state between sleep and insomnia.”

In 2018, the Semperoper is appointing conductor Omer Meir Wellber, who made his debut in Dresden in 2010 and has subsequently been responsible for numerous outstanding productions, as its Principal Guest Conductor. This has been announced today at the press conference presenting season 2018/19.

In May 2018 cellist Jan Vogler will release his newest CD by Sony Classical with Double Concertos for Violine & Violoncello by Brahms, Rihm and Harbison , together with violinist Mira Wang. They are accompanied by the Royal Scottish National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Peter Oundjian.
The DVD “Midori Plays Bach”, released by Accentus in October 2017, was included in the German Record Critics’ Award’s (“Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik”) „Quarterly Critics’ Choice 1/2018“ (“Bestenliste”) in the category of “Concert & Documentary serious music”.

On Friday, 16 February the OSM and Kent Nagano will present a musical experiment: With the orchestra hidden behind a curtain and the hall plunged into darkness, the audience will be left with only music to whisk it back to the 1960s, with, among others, the premiere of a work for electric guitar and orchestra by John Anthony Lennon.
