“We return to Montreal inspired, exhilarated, and full of the sights, sounds and unforgettable memories of our whirlwind South American tour. Over the course of two weeks we performed in sold-out halls to enthusiastic audiences, took in the wonderfully rich culture of five great cities, and made important friendships and connections that will last a lifetime,” said Kent Nagano.

The tour began in Brazil with two concerts in São Paulo (Sala São Paulo) on April 23 and 24, followed by a concert in Rio de Janeiro (Teatro Municipal) on April 25. The OSM next visited Uruguay for a concert at the Teatro del Sodre in Montevideo on April 27, before traveling to Argentina for two concerts in Buenos Aires (Teatro Colón) on April 29 and 30. The tour finished on May 3 in Colombia, with a concert in Bogotá (Teatro Mayor). The most recent visit by the OSM to Brazil and Argentina had taken place in 1998, while the concerts in Colombia and Uruguay were the first by the Orchestra in those countries.

Completing the Verdi trilogy of the Wiener Festwochen, Omer Meir Wellber will conduct the premiere of “Il Trovatore” at the Theater an der Wien on 26 May. On the occasion of the composer’s 200th birthday, Wellber had been assigned to conduct Verdi’s big three operas: “Rigoletto” in 2011 and “La Traviata” in 2012. The new production of “Il Trovatore” is directed by film and opera director Philipp Stölzl.

Kent Nagano opens the 2013/14 season with two concerts on 4 and 5 October 2013, featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Galina Ustvolskaya’s Symphony No. 4 “Prayer”, and a new work by Swedish composer Henrik Strindberg.

In his role as Artistic Advisor and Principal Guest Conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony, Kent Nagano will spend seven weeks with the orchestra in 2013/2014, leading 12 concerts. The programmes will focus on both traditional and new repertoire: a Bach Brandenburg concerto sharing space with Philip Glass’ Violin Concerto, and Richard Strauss’ “Sinfonia domestica” followed by Leonard Bernstein’s “Trouble in Tahiti”. Kent Nagano is also honouring the orchestra’s Swedish tradition, conducting new works by Henrik Strindberg and Jesper Nordin, and paying homage to Stenhammar by performing his Piano Concerto No. 2 with Mari Kodama as soloist. On 8 May 2014 Kent Nagano leads the world première of Unsuk Chin’s Clarinet Concerto, with soloist Kari Kriikku, a work commissioned by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.

Old and new companions, such as violinists Midori, Nicola Benedetti, Kai Vogler, violist Nils Mönkemeyer, cellist Peter Bruns, pianists Kristian Bezuidenhout, Alice Sara Ott, Antti Siirala, and soprano Juliane Banse, are following Jan Vogler’s invitation this year to rehearse and perform together in Moritzburg. Composer-in-residence of the anniversary edition will be one of the most renowned and versatile contemporaries, Wolfang Rihm.

For the 8^th time, 45 students from all over the world will form the Moritzburg Festival Orchestra and rehearse and perform chamber and orchestra works together, this year under the direction of conductor Eric Jacobsen. Among others, they will present the gala concert on 11 August with violinist Midori and Berg’s violin concerto „To the Memory of an Angel“.

The program compiles works of past festival editions and CD productions: among compositions by Wolfgang Rihm, works by Schubert, Piazzolla, Schumann, Wagner, Korngold, Messiaen, Bach and others will be presented. For the first time, one of the venues will be a hangar of the Elbe aircraft factory Dresden, and furthermore the familiar baroque halls of the Moritzburg castle, Dresden’s Palais im Großen Garten and Frauenkirche, as well as the Transparent Factory of Volkswagen.

Prior to the festival, „Moritzburg Festival on tour“ will guestperform at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden on 7 July.

The recording was made during his first year as Music Director at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia at the rostrum of the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana. In Mariusz Trelinski’s production he leads “an ideally well-balanced vocal cast” (Die Welt, 5 February 2011) headed by Artur Ruzinski as Onegin and Kristīne Opolais as Tatyana. 

Mariusz Trelinski, Polish filmmaker and theater director, has created a series of dream-like, surrealist tableaux. The clear lines of the production are echoed by the slender musical design of Omer Meir Wellber –  “Young and highly talented conductor Omer Meir Wellber turns Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin into a miracle of poetry.” writes Julia Spinola in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (29 January 2011).

The orchestra has two reasons at once to celebrate: its 80th anniversary and the inauguration of the organ Grand Orgue Pierre Béique in the newly built concert hall that was opened in 2011.

Kent Nagano said: “For 80 years Montrealers have been coming together to share in the beauty of orchestral concerts and the authentic sense of community they celebrate. As we mark the launch of our 2013-2014 season and third year at the Maison symphonique de Montréal, we continue to broaden the expressive possibilities afforded by the superb acoustics of our hall, while nurturing the great interpretive traditions at the core of the OSM’s identity as an orchestra. The inauguration of the Grand Orgue Pierre Béique brings long awaited new possibilities, to be explored through repertoire both old and new. The organ is the culmination of the dream and the last missing element of the Maison symphonique’s original design.”

The inauguration of the organ will be celebrated with concerts at the end of May. Kent Nagano conducts Saint-Saens’ Symphony No. 3 for organ and the world premiere of Kaija Saariahos Maan verjot for organ and orchestra, commissioned by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Southbank Centre London. Kent Nagano will open the new season in September with La Damnation de Faust by Berlioz.

South American tour

From 23 April to 3 May 2013 Kent Nagano and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal will be visiting South America. The tour will begin in Brazil with two concerts in São Paulo (Sala São Paulo), on 23 and 24 April, followed by one concert in Rio de Janeiro (Theatro Municipal de Rio de Janeiro) on 25 April. The OSM will then travel to Uruguay for a concert at Teatro Solís in Montevideo on 27 April, before flying to Argentina for two concerts, on 29 and 30 April, in Buenos Aires (Teatro Colón) and to Colombia with a concert in Bogotá (Teatro Mayor) on 3 May.

Kent Nagano will be conducting two different programs. The first program will comprise works by Wagner, Liszt and Brahms, featuring pianist Serhiy Salov. The second program will consist of compositions by Berlioz, Ravel, Stravinsky and Rimsky-Korsakov.


New recording – Mahler: Orchestral songs | Christian Gerhaher

A recording of Mahler’s Orchestral Songs with Christian Gerhaher and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal under Kent Nagano will be released in Canada by Analekta/Sony in April and will be available in Europe from August 2013.

Further performances will be on 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 March.

On 13 March Omer Meir Wellber will present an all-Mozart programme at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia. Wellber himself will perform Mozart’s piano concerto No. 12 and conduct the Symphonies No. 1 and 41.  

On 18 March Omer Meir Wellber opens the season of the Filarmonica del Teatro la Fenice. Wellber will lead the orchestra performing Tchaikovsky’s Cappriccio italien, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.
