Just in time for their European tour, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra directed by its music director Manfred Honeck will release two recordings on Exton: Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.
Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 is the third of the orchestra’s Mahler recordings under Manfred Honeck and follows the successful recording of Symphonies No. 1 and 4. Soprano Michelle DeYoung, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and the Children’s Festival Chorus perform together with the orchestra. The recording of Symphony No. 5 is planned to be released next in the Mahler cycle.
Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 will be part of the programme during the European tour of the orchestra from 26 August to 11 September 2011. In this work it is “essential to watch the tiniest details of the varying moods and let every musical phrase become part of the whole story” says Manfred Honeck.
On their tour, the orchestra will be appearing at Rheingau Music Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Grafenegg Festival, BBC Proms, Lucerne Festival, Beethovenfest Bonn, Musikfest Berlin, in Paris and Vilnius, Lithuania. Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and pianist Hélène Grimaud will be joining the orchestra on tour.
