The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) and its Music Director Manfred Honeck are returning to Europe from 25 October to 10 November 2012.
The tour will take Honeck and the PSO to Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Luxembourg, and Cologne, Frankfurt and Stuttgart in Germany. During a week-long residency at the Musikverein in Vienna the orchestra will perform four concerts.
Violinist Nikolaj Znaider and pianist Rudolf Buchbinder will be joining the orchestra on tour. Please see the full tour programme on the list below.
Manfred Honeck, who has been Music Director of the PSO since November 2008, just recently extended his contract through the 2019/20 season. Besides numerous concerts in Pittsburgh he has led the orchestra on acclaimed tours in Europe, Asia, Canada and the US.
“Touring with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is always a fantastic experience,” Honeck said. “It is very special that we are returning to cities where the PSO has performed before to great success. It is also wonderful to return to Vienna and my musical roots, to the city where I grew up and played professionally for so many years.”
James A. Wilkinson, since November 2011 the PSO’s new President and CEO comments: “On the previous tour to Europe, Manfred Honeck and the Orchestra played to sold-out houses and received great acclaim. It is a tremendous honor for an orchestra to be invited for a residency at the Musikverein, and it speaks volumes about how highly our music director and musicians are thought of throughout the world.”
The PSO and Manfred Honeck just released a recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 on Exton as part of their Mahler cycle. Their recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 wins an ICMA 2012 Award. For press copies please contact us.
