On September 11, 2011 the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and its Music Director Manfred Honeck will be performing at the Musikfest Berlin in the Philharmonie. Part of the programme that evening, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, can be seen live online on ArteLiveWeb http://liveweb.arte.tv/de/video/PSO_Mahler and the website of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at 8.45 pm CEST this coming Sunday and can be viewed on these websites afterwards. The programme will also be streamed on the American Public Media website, starting September 12, 2011.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Manfred Honeck are humbled to be part of this commemoration:
“The tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks has a very serious meaning for all the people of the world. For the people of Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania, it has a special significance, as one of the four attacking planes was brought down by its passengers in a field not far from Pittsburgh. These brave passengers sacrificed their lives so that others would not die. To them and to all of the victims of 9/11 the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra dedicates this worldwide streaming of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5 from the Berlin Philharmonie.”

This Berlin concert will be the last one of a three-week tour that saw the orchestra playing twelve concerts in Germany, Austria, Lithuania, Switzerland, Great Britain and France. The streaming will be produced by the Digital Concert Hall. The Digital Concert Hall is the virtual concert venue of the Berliner Philharmoniker on the Internet.   

In collaboration with the US Embassy in Germany and the city of Berlin musicians from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will participate in a memorial event on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001 at the Rotes Rathaus Berlin. Klaus Wowereit, mayor of Berlin and Philip D. Murphy, ambassador of the United States of America in Germany will speak at the event at 2.30 pm.
